From application to award

Line up your reference
Ask a teacher, counselor, coach, or employer to submit the reference form. Give them the link and a deadline.

Submit your application
The application asks for your basics, your school plans, and two short essays: why you, and how you would use the funds.

Board review
The board of directors reads every complete application. References and essays carry real weight.

Notification and disbursement
Every applicant hears back. Recipients' funds go directly to their institution or approved provider.

How much is the award?
Each award is up to $6,000 for one year of study. Funds are paid directly to your institution or an approved provider, not to you as cash.
Who can apply?
College-bound high school seniors and students already enrolled in a college or trade school. Full criteria for the current cycle, including any residency or enrollment requirements, are published with each application window.
What can the money be used for?
Tuition and fees, housing, food and meal plans, study abroad programs, internship stipends, and in some cases graduate study. The award is deliberately flexible because tuition is only part of what school costs.
Do I need a reference?
Yes. Someone who knows your character and work, a teacher, counselor, coach, or employer, submits a short reference through this site. Ask them early. Applications are stronger when the reference arrives before review begins.
Is this only for students with top grades?
No. BEST exists for capable students in the middle, the ones who work hard but do not fit the profile of a full merit ride or qualify for need-based grants. Your full picture matters more than a single number.
When is the deadline?
Deadlines are set per award cycle and announced on this page, on the apply page, and through the mailing list. Join the list at the bottom of any page to be notified.
How are recipients selected?
The board of directors reviews complete applications, including essays and references, and selects recipients for each cycle. Every applicant is notified of the outcome.
